compose a sexy jazz song

I've been getting a lot of inspiration from blues and the minor key; it's my favorite kind of music. I also have Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" in my head every day. I like the lyrics his wife wrote to that song, and I want to write something similar, but slower, and about lust, similar to the words Brubeck's wife wrote for the song. A professor once told me that singing is sort of a sex act all ready, as one uses the body as the instrument, after all. So I'm going to write a song that uses vocals to portray feelings of lust, not just with words but with notes put together in such a way that'll make you all hot and bothered. :-) It's gonna be good for me to write, too, because even though I'm in a relationship, I somewhat suppress my sexuality; writing this piece is going to be a great way to vent!

Ouch!

I spent years failing to write a decent song, and it was only recently I worked out why. For a number of years, I wrote lyrics for a band, and let one of the other guys set them to music. Cracking stuff. And one time I did write a decent song for a play I was in, but I used the words from the play to do so.

Then I spent three years sitting down at a leyboard, or with my guitar, and failed to write any songs at all, and eventually gave up frustrated, and became a lawyer (having had all of the band's demo tapes sent back by record companies. You have to be pretty disillusioned as a musician to chuck it in to become a lawyer!)

Only now do I realise that I should have written the lyrics first, and let the music come, rather than try to build a great song from a series of riffs. Because all I ended up with was "de-dem, de-dum, de-dum" iambic pentameter, and a series of trite words in my head.

That said, it's a very personal thing. I know some people who can compase the whole thing in their heads, and others who have to have a libretto to work from. Elton John is am excellent example of someone who needed fantastic lyrics to produce fantastic songs. It's a shame he became such a joke figure in later life, but you listen to what he did with Bernie Taupin's lyrics, and you can see how inspired words can produce inspired music.

So find out what works for you, and don't fall into the rut I did! Maybe pick a great poem, compose something to that, and then come back and write the words. Or write a great poem without any music in your head, and then write the song to match
