Is he concentrating on forming and structuring sentences, or on spelling?

One thing I found that really helped get the boy I was tutoring to start writing, was to get him to write things that had meaning to him. For example, I told him he had to learn to write because how could he send a letter to his absent dad? So we then sat down and wrote his dad a letter. Then we started going through workbooks that start off with the child having to copy straight/squiggly lines, then start on letters, then sentences etc.

And if you feel you have poor spelling, that could actually work in your favour too. You could keep a dictionary out and look up words together, and perhaps even make a list of your most common spelling mistakes in a notebook and then test each other on them each week. Learning together! :-D

My dad is a poor speller (slightly dyslexic), and he has a great "dictionary" which is called "How To Find a Word if You Can't Spell It" (which, when I was growing up, I thought was called "How To Find a WORLD if you can't SMELL it!!!) (which may mean I am also slightly....).

There are some fun "anti-colouring books" around, which encourage children's imaginations....they can draw a picture and write about it underneath.

Try not to get too grammatical with James, but ask him to tell you a simple story...get an interesting object, and ask him to describe it. Then ask him to write down some of the words he used. Then see if he can use those words to make a sentence. Build it up step by step.

What is his teacher saying about his one word stories? I hope she accepts them, while encouraging him to expand.
